MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE

It is with great pleasure, commitment and a profound sense of responsibility that we invite professionals, researchers, students and all those involved in the care of newborns and their families to participate in the XV International Workshop and Congress on Kangaroo Mother Care and the 2nd Brazilian Congress on Kangaroo Care, to be held from November 18th to 21st 2026, in Brasília, Brazil.

With the central theme “Kangaroo Care in a Diverse World: A Meeting of Cultures, Knowledge and Care”, this Congress proposes a space for plural and inclusive dialogue. Diversity — of territories, languages, cultures, professional practices, parental experiences and life trajectories — is understood here as a strength for the implementation of Kangaroo Mother Care, a practice recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and strongly supported by scientific evidence.

It is through this meeting of perspectives that our commitment to life, equity and the dignity of every baby and every family is renewed. By bringing together different practices and worldviews, we expand the capacity of Kangaroo Care to embrace diverse realities and to promote sensitive, equitable and culturally informed care, enabling its benefits to reach an increasing number of newborns and families.

The 2026 Congress is born from this purpose: to bring together people, knowledge and experiences to build pathways that make sense in a complex and diverse world. Brasília, the capital of Brazil and a city symbolically marked by encounters, agreements and visions for the future, will provide the ideal setting for this international convergence.

This will be the second time Brazil hosts the World Congress on Kangaroo Care. The first took place in 2004, in Rio de Janeiro, during the V International Workshop and Congress on Kangaroo Mother Care, when the National Guidelines for the Implementation of Kangaroo Mother Care were celebrated and disseminated internationally, following their approval through National Ordinance No. 693, dated 5th July 2000. This pioneering initiative formally incorporated Kangaroo Care into the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) and laid the foundations for its nationwide implementation.

More than two decades later, in 2026, Brasília once again places Brazil at the centre of global discussions on Kangaroo Care, reaffirming the country’s trajectory and its historical commitment to humanised neonatal care.

Over the course of four days, two complementary events will take place, each with distinct formats and purposes: the Workshop (18th-19th November), with limited places, aimed at working groups and delegations involved in the development of guidelines, policies and action plans; and the Congress (20th–21st November), open to the general public. The Congress will feature keynote lectures, multicultural panels, high-level scientific discussions, poster presentations, fostering exchanges of experiences between countries and regions, as well as moments dedicated for families.

During the registration process, participants will be able to choose to attend both events or only one of them. This will be a unique opportunity to reaffirm ethical commitments, strengthen public policies and renew global alliances in support of care centred on the newborns, their mother, their father, their family and their community.

We invite you to join us. Every voice, every story and every gesture of care contributes to the collective strength that sustains Kangaroo Care in Brazil and around the world.

We look forward to welcoming you to Brasília.
